Women's History Month Part 3

    

The STEP Committee would like to celebrate two of our local female heroes in education, including one of our own DKG California members.

Krystal Lomanto, Superintendent of San Benito County Schools

Superintendent Lomanto is in her 33rd year in education. Krystal started her career as a high school science teacher, coach, class advisor and a teacher on special assignment. 

Krystal was offered an Assistant Principal position in 2004 at San Benito High School District that served close to 2,900 students. She was in the Assistant Principal position for four years. During this time, she was also a North County Joint Union School District board member for six years and a volunteer coach in community. 

Krystal moved into the principal position at San Benito High School in 2007. She led the site during the last recession helping to close the achievement gap for English Learners and Latinx students. Krystal was a champion for equity, access and inclusion for all students on her campus. Under her leadership, the district implemented many new processes that engaged students and families and helped to build a positive culture on campus.

Superintendent Lomanto served as the high school principal for 7 years and was elected as the San Benito County Superintendent of Schools in January of 2015. Krystal is in her second term as County Superintendent. Krystal is the first WOMEN SUPERINTENDENT in San Benito County. She is passionate about the community she serves and has been awarded several distinguished awards, ACSA Region 10 Superintendent of the Year, San Benito County Chamber Women of the Year and League of United Latin American Citizens Women of the Year.  Superintendent Lomanto is deeply involved in the community and is a board member for United Way of San Benito County, Child Abuse Prevention Council, member of Zeta Epsilon, member of the Women’s Club of Hollister, member and former president of Hollister Rotary, and member of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), just to name a few. 

Krystal Lomanto has led the San Benito County Office of Education with passion and commitment to meet the needs of all students across the county. The San Benito County Office of Education has implemented the “Building Bridges 2 Literacy” initiative that brought the entire community together to support literacy for all students across the county. 

Superintendent Lomanto currently is a member of the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA) Board of Directors and represents Region 5 (Monterey, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz). She is a member of the K12 Highspeed Network board and was selected to be one of sixteen superintendents across the state to sit on State Superintendents, Tony Thurmond’s task force.  Delta Kappa Gamma and Zeta Epsilon are proud to honor Mrs. Krystal Lomanto during Womens history month.

Lisa MacKenzie, M.A.

Lisa MacKenzie has spent her entire teaching career, of over 30 years, helping struggling students become successful in school and life. She is a special education teacher, author, speaker, and nationally recognized educator. Lisa has her master's degree in Special Education. She holds her Mild/Moderate and Multiple Subject credentials, a supplementary autism credential and single subject science credential.

In addition, Lisa is a certified behavior specialist and mindfulness instructor. In addition to teaching, Lisa is the co-author of the best-selling book, Setting Limits in the Classroom with her husband, Dr. Robert MacKenzie, which is used in university credential programs throughout the United States. Lisa is one of the curriculum writers for the Choose Love for Schools Program. While piloting the original Choose Love Program several years ago, Lisa developed a Social Emotional Learning/Trauma Sensitive program to serve students with extreme social-emotional and behavioral needs, which earned the Distinguished Schools Award for her school.

Lisa is an area director for Delta Kappa Gamma CA and was previously a member of the Support Team for Emerging Professionals as well. Lisa has always been available to share her knowledge as well as her kindness. The ocean is her sanctuary. She loves to scuba dive, snorkel, kayak, surf, or anything else in or on the water.

Delta Kappa Gamma CA is honored to have Lisa MacKenzie in our fold.

Penne Ferrell Award

  Penne Ferrell Awards as a Recruitment Tool                Penne Ferrell was a longtime member of Epsilon Omicron chapter in Orange County. She had a great passion for education and literacy, mentoring new teachers and Delta Kappa Gamma. In honor of her love for our organization, California State received a bequest from her estate that was used to create the Penne Ferrell fund. Non-member educators in their first three years of assignment are eligible to apply for a Penne Ferrell grant for reading resources. The Penne Ferrell fund ensures that every single year many emerging educators have a resource to help establish their libraries. We know that the size of a teacher’s classroom library has been linked to the level of literacy achievement for their students so nothing could be more important than building those libraries as quickly as possible.
